This exciting, narrated journey along the scenic “Journey to the Sky” takes you 10 miles into Santa Catalina Island’s protected wilderness area. Along the trip you’ll see spectacular vistas, deep canyons, quiet coves and an endless blue ocean. Keep your eyes open for the island’s wildlife before you visit the Catalina Nature Center at the Airport in the Sky. The airport’s DC-3 Gifts & Grill offers a quick bite and their famous “killer cookies.” Bring your camera because picture-perfect scenes fill the entire tour.
The Journey to the Sky will travel out of Avalon and onto Stagecoach Road which was, in fact, used by horse-pulled stage coaches in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The excursion will go past several historical Catalina landmarks and take a break (about 15-20 minutes) at the Airport in the Sky. This is one of the highest points on the island and also features a unique local gift shop, small historical photo museum about aviation on Catalina and a native plant garden plus natural history display. The tour will then travel back down toward Avalon with views of the Catalina Zip Line course and gorgeous Avalon.
Be on the lookout for our National Mammal: You have a great chance of seeing bison on the Journey to the Sky. They travel along the same paths as the tour bus. Often it’s not if you will see them, but how close you will see them. Keep a sharp eye out.
Enjoy an experience with your friends & family: Large family and friend groups love the Journey to the Sky because they can all travel together on the same tour bus. Both infants & children can go on the Journey to the Sky. Due to the size and speed of the bus, booster & child seats are not required.
For your safety, you should be in good health & free from high blood pressure, heart, neck or back problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this tour. The Journey to the Sky travels on steep, narrow, winding, bumpy, dusty, scenic mountain roads.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes based on the season. Layers may be appropriate based on the season as temperatures can vary by as much as 10 degrees from that of Avalon. You may want to bring some spending money for the snack bar & gift shop. Gratuity for your guide is not included but is accepted and greatly appreciated!
