Summer is in full swing on Catalina Island, with warm weather and refreshing sea temperatures luring visitors and locals alike to the island’s crystal-clear waters and picturesque beaches. Adventure abounds at this time of year, with Catalina activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, swimming and stand-up paddling particularly popular. If perfect weather and an abundance of adventures aren’t enough to entice you to visit, here are five things to do on Catalina Island in August.
Movies on the Beach: Warm summer nights are the perfect time to get the family together for a movie on the beach. The City of Avalon and CHOICES host movies on various Wednesdays throughout the summer. Your last chance to enjoy this summer tradition is August 10, when the popular Disney film Luca is screened just after sunset. The movie is free; refreshments will be available for purchase.
First Fridays at the Museum: The cinematic attractions don’t stop there. The Catalina Museum for Art & History continues its popular First Fridays program with Dinner & a Movie on August 5. Featuring a full German-inspired dinner and screening of the Elvis classic “G.I. Blues” on the Museum’s outdoor amphitheater, the evening promises to be unforgettable, especially since “Elvis” will make an appearance. Beach Bingo: A Catalina summer tradition for decades, Beach Bingo brings together families for fun on the beach every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the summer. Join in the fun on South Beach between 6 and 7 p.m. until August 25.
Catalina Concert Series — The Highwayman Show: The Xceptional Music Company’s Catalina Island Concert Series has proven to be an ideal summer activity for the entire family, complete with dancing in the street, a beer garden and irresistible music. On August 20, the concert will feature the classic music of Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and Waylon Jennings. It all happens at 8 p.m. on Wrigley Stage.
